A few weeks ago I stumbled across a pin from this post on Almost Exactly about a chemical free beauty routine. And when I say chemical free, I mean NO shampoo/conditioner. My reaction was "no way!"...but tell me more...the author of the blog, Alex Raye, completely cut out chemicals from her beauty routine - hair products, makeup, toothpaste, deodorant, everything! I've been struggling with weirdly intense breakouts lately (sorry if that's an overshare, ha! :) and her posts on the OCM (or oil cleansing method) were really interesting. I'm not sure I'm ready to totally jump on the chemical-free bandwagon but the databases from the Environmental Working Group including the Skin Deep database Alex shared about are a great resource for shopping smarter for your beauty products and being aware of the potentially harmful ingredients used by some companies & manufacturers.
I used EWG's Skin Deep database to look up some of the products I use on a regular basis. Basically the database uses information on each ingredient to rate products on a 0-10 scale - 0 -2 being low or no hazard, 3-6 being a moderate hazard, and 7-10 being a high hazard for your health.
Aveeno Smart Essentials Daily Detoxifying Scrub // EWG rating: 4
Cover Girl Professionals Super Thick Lash mascara // EWG rating: 6
Burt's Bees Tinted lip balm // EWG rating: 3
Dove Go Fresh Revive body wash // EWG rating: 5
All of these are considered moderately hazardous - eep. I was really surprised about the Dove bodywash! Not only can you search by product, but you can search by ingredient in case the exact product isn't in the database yet. So next time you're looking for a new product, check out the ingredients and look it up to find out about yucky things you don't want in your body! Check out this post as well for a quick and dirty list of chemicals to avoid!
What do you think - would you go chemical free? I think it's at least good to be more aware of what I buy and use! :) If you're interested, here's a list of chemical-free products recommended by Almost Exactly! I'm thinking about changing out a few things as I run out of them - I'll share if I find a good chemical-free alternative!
